Russian Firm Signs Nuclear Energy Pacts with Burkina Faso and Mali

On the sidelines of the 6th Russian Energy Week Forum in Moscow last week, Rosatom signed two MoUs for cooperation in the nuclear energy field. The first Memorandum of Understanding was signed with and the Ministry of Mines, Quarries and Energy of Burkina Faso to cover the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The MoU is the first document in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy between Russia and Burkina Faso. Rosatom states the agreement promotes “closer cooperation in a wide range of areas, including approaches to nuclear generation projects, non-energy application of nuclear energy in industry, agriculture and medicine, the development of nuclear infrastructure in Burkina Faso and raising public awareness of nuclear technologies.”

The second MoU was between Rosatom and Mali’s Ministry of Energy and Water resources. The memorandum outlines both the priority tasks and instruments of cooperation, as well as areas of mutual interest for joint work. These are development of the nuclear infrastructure of the Republic of Mali, raising public awareness of nuclear technology, fundamental and applied research, use of radioisotopes, nuclear, radiation safety and security, personnel training, nuclear research facilities, and nuclear power.
