The New Desertec Looks to Cameroon and Senegal

As the Desertec Foundation disbanded after internal disputes, Desertec France has been launched in its place with an interest in new African projects. Desertec France released a statement saying that it will pursue renewable energy development by working in France and Africa, getting more involved in countries like Cameroon and Senegal.

Although the Desertec Foundation split from the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII), the Sahara-powered solar scheme supported by DII will continue on schedule. DII head of communications Klaus Schmidtke told Alternative Energy Africa, “Desertec France describes itself as a civil society movement in the press release. Consequently there should be no risk of confusion with DII.” He said that Desertec France had an NGO approach and DII remains an international industrial initiative.

Desertec France plans to pool a panel of experts from various fields to make a “unified scientific contribution to the debate on energy transition”.
