Djibouti aims to be the first African nation to only use renewable energy sources for power generation by 2020. And the small country is already well on its way with 65% of its power generating capacity coming from renewable energy sources in 2011, increasing to 75% in 2012.
Djibouti president Ismail Omar Guelleh said that further plans were underway to reach 85% of renewable energy capacity by 2015. "We think that instituting this energy transition within a decade is not only possible, given our potential for solar, wind and geothermal energy, but it is also essential for the well-being of our population," the leader said at the World Energy Forum.
