Cameroon Solar Usage Increases Thanks to Sharing

Many Cameroonians are unable to afford conventionally powered generators and are turning to solar energy-powered products that can easily be shared among neighbors. Some homes in Yaounde and Douala cities are switching from hydropower to solar sharing mini-solar panels that supply electricity to around 15 homes.

Putting funds together allows for a cheaper rate for many citizens and ensures a wider reach with the panel costs ranging from $400 to $10,000. Programs such as Cameroon Solar Energy Initiative, launched in 2011, have really helped propel the industry. There are now over 25 registered companies selling solar panels, up from only seven in 2008. In addition to that, it seems as if Cameroon’s solar sector has caught the attention of the Desertec Industrial Initiative.
