The Democratic Republic of Congo’s security forces have taken control over strategic locations overlooking Goma, forcing rebel M23 fighters to withdraw.
The rebels have been fighting for 18 months, but said they left the area to allow an independent investigation into shelling that has killed civilians in Goma and Rwanda’s Gisenyi. The DRC’s troops are backed by the UN despite the rebels claiming that they would retake control of the area if the government refused negotiations.
Rwanda has been accused of financially supporting the rebels and even began facing possible sanctions.
