Kanzimbe Solar Plant Breaks Ground

In Malawi work on the Kanzimbe solar power plant in the Salima region has started. The 60 MW capacity infrastructure will be built by JCM Matswana Solar Energy and is already under a power purchase agreement with Escom, the national power company.

According to Peter Mutharika, Malawi’s president, who inaugurated the start of construction, the plant is part of the government’s policy to increase access to electricity in the country.

"I am concerned about the problems of the electricity sector because they affect all other sectors. That's why my government is actively working to ensure that additional investments are made in the sector,” said the president.

The head of state has indeed revealed that policies are being developed by his administration, to enable diversification of the sector largely dependent on hydropower. These measures should also allow the sector to open up to independent energy producers in order
