The US government, through its Power Africa initiative announced it will provide $4 million in awards to eight household solar firms under the Power Africa Scaling Off Grid Grand Challenge -- a $36 million investment to empower entrepreneurs and investors to connect 20 million households in sub-Saharan Africa to modern, clean, and affordable electricity.
The Off Grid Grand Challenge reached several new milestones including the naming of the eight winners under the challenge. Winners include: Greenlight Planet, d.Light, Fenix, Orb Energy, Vitalite, PEG, Shinbone Labs, and Village Energy. These awards will support the development of new off-grid businesses and the scale-up or entry into new markets for off-grid household solar solutions.
The government also announced that Microsoft, Acumen Fund, and the UNF joined the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development and have committed to leveraging their investments, capabilities, and networks.
