At least 53 soldiers and one civilian were killed in an attack on an army post in northern Mali on Friday, the government said. This is one of the deadliest strikes against the West African country’s military in recent memory. Daesh, or the Islamic State (ISIS), has claimed responsibility but has not offered any evidence.
The attack took place in Indelimane, Menaka region.
“Heavily armed unidentified men attacked around noon. The attack started with shellfire ... Then they retreated toward Niger,” government spokesman Yaya Sangare told Reuters on Saturday.
In a separate incident, a French troop was killed when his vehicle drove over an explosive device, according to a statement by the French presidency
