Uganda intends to raise an estimated $ 2.5 billion by 2026 for expansion of its electricity grid, according to the National Electricity Regulatory Authority. The expansion falls within the framework of the country's national plan for socio-economic development, Vision 2040.

Currently, only 22% of Ugandans have access to energy and this figure drops to 7% in rural areas. The country has an electric power capacity of about 600 MW, composed of 80% hydroelectricity, about 22% thermal.
